Quik Pod Review

by Jeff on June 25, 2009

Have you ever found yourself out Geocaching with a friend and wanted to take a photo of the two of you at the cache location? So, you take out your camera and then you have to make a decision.

Does one of you get elected to take the photo of the other one?

Do you prop the camera on a fallen log or large stump, set the self-timer and hope you guessed correctly on your being able to get both of you in the frame without cutting your heads off or being off center?

Maybe you just hold the camera at arms length and hope for the best.

There’s a better way and it’s called a Quik Pod

Couple using Quik Pod

Quik Pod is a hand-held telescopic monopod. Basically it’s an extension of your arm. You mount your digital camera or one of the new micro video cameras on the swivel end and extend the Quik Pod out. Set the self-timer on the camera and look at the small built in mirror at the base of the swivel head to get an idea of what the camera will see and wait for the timer to trip the shutter. That’s it!  Finally a way to get a great shot without leaving one of you out of the photo.

This thing fits right in your cache bag. It will be used as much as your GPS receiver. You won’t know how you got along without it. It’s also great for other outdoor activities like hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, fishing, and sporting events. I’ve even seen scuba divers use it with a waterproof camera. Hmmm, maybe a self portrait at the underwater cache site….

With it’s extended reach you can easily take creative overhead shots that make your pictures more interesting.

I’ve been using mine for a week now and highly recommend it for your caching adventures. You could pick up an extra one and donate it as a door prize at your next Geocaching event.

If you think of any other activities the Quik Pod could be used for please leave a note in the comments section.

I’d like to personally thank Wayne Fromm, the inventor and President of FrommWorks for sending me a review sample. The unit I received was the Quik Pod Pro+ that contains the basic Quik Pod, carry bag, carabiner hiking clip, pocket clip, end cap and wrist strap and tripod adapter legs. The adapter legs can quickly be attached at the bottom to create a tabletop tripod for even more versatility.
